Biar

The name of the town originates from Roman times when it was called Apiarium, the Roman name for a beehive, as it was one of the most important areas for honey in eastern Spain due to the abundance of flavoursome mountain herbs. Biar is said to have one of the best-preserved 16-18th century building heritages in the Valencian Community.

Modern day Biar thrives on the production of dolls, blankets and hand-forged metal work including gates, verandahs, bed heads and balconies that are still made in the traditional way. Small-scale ceramic factories have been a major part of Biar“s economy since the 18th century and these days produce everything from vases, dishes and bowls to flower pots, draining boards and large earthenware jugs.
